Advanced Communication Skills Training (ACST) is a two-day, multi-professional course for experienced healthcare professionals, delivered primarily through simulation-based learning. The programme draws on the evidence base for effective communication in healthcare and supports participants in applying advanced communication strategies to complex and challenging clinical interactions.

Simulation-based experiential learning: The course centres on actor-led, simulated person scenarios that reflect real-world complexity, allowing participants to explore and practise advanced communication skills in a realistic and immersive learning environment.

Participant-led simulation: Learning is guided by participants’ experience and priorities, with structured opportunities to reflect on current practice, rehearse new communication approaches within simulation, and receive constructive, facilitated feedback in a safe and supportive setting.

Expert simulation facilitators: The course is delivered by experienced facilitators with clinical backgrounds and expertise in advanced communication skills and simulation-based education, supporting high-quality learning and reflective practice throughout.

Extra Consideration prior to applying for course:

Each participant will be required to undertake a role play based on a previous encounter with a person e.g. patient, family member or colleague. This will be video recorded and reviewed to enhance participant learning.

Due to the focus and reflective nature of this course, participants are advised to contact the course facilitator if they have had a significant trauma or bereavement in the last 6-9 months.
