Healthcare Assistants – Caring with Purpose 19th November 2026
Eligible to attend: Healthcare Assistants (HCA’s) working in settings which provide palliative care
Time: 08.15 – 14.45
The aim of this course is to enhance the knowledge and skills of healthcare assistants who work with patients/residents in receipt of palliative care.
This one-day programme has been developed by staff from the education department and the clinical areas of Milford Care Centre. It has been designed to increase understanding of commonly encountered conditions, particularly dementia and delirium. Core communication skills and managing distressing conversations are also explored with opportunity for discussion and critique of pre-recorded video role plays.
On completing this study day participants will:
Recognise the role of the healthcare assistant in providing holistic care to patients/residents and their families.
- Describe the signs of delirium and the role of the healthcare assistant in the prevention and management of delirium in patients/residents.
- Discuss the role of the healthcare assistant in the care of a patient/resident with dementia.
- Recognise the importance of effective communication and discuss the core skills involved.
- Examine the role of the healthcare assistant in providing psychosocial and spiritual support to patients/residents and families.
- Recognise the importance of caring for oneself in order to care for others.
