Aim: This immersive one-day programme provides nurses with the opportunity to strengthen their clinical decision-making and communication skills when caring for patients with palliative needs. The course combines targeted educational updates with high-fidelity simulation exercises, enabling participants to apply knowledge in a safe, supportive, and realistic environment.
During the day, learners will explore key palliative care areas of practice, including the assessment and management of breathlessness, recognition of terminal delirium with a focus on palliative sedation and associated difficult conversations. Facilitated scenarios and debriefing sessions focus on developing confidence, reflective practice, and effective communication with patients, families, and the wider healthcare team.
On completing this course nurses will be able to:
- Apply enhanced clinical reasoning to common palliative care presentations, particularly Breathlessness and Terminal Delirium.
- Demonstrate improved confidence and competence in making timely, patient-centred decisions in complex or uncertain situations.
- Communicate effectively and compassionately during challenging conversations, including discussions around clinical uncertainty and a deteriorating patient.
- Integrate evidence-based palliative care principles into everyday nursing practice.
- Reflect on personal communication styles and clinical approaches through structured debrief and peer feedback.
