Specialist Palliative Care Day Unit FAQ

It is available to you if you have specialist palliative care needs, live in the Mid-West area and your GP/Consultant feels you would benefit from our services.

You will have an initial assessment by a nurse from our Community Service or the Specialist Inpatient Unit.

Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.  Dates of attendance are pre-arranged with our Day Care Coordinator or staff nurse.

We want your experience of the Day Unit to be relaxing and for you to be fully supported by our staff.  Following assessment, members of our multidisciplinary team will offer you a personal care plan to meet specific goals over an 8 week period.

We can facilitate up to 10 people daily and offer the following care:

  • Nursing assessment and care
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Complementary Therapy
  • Art Therapy
  • Music Therapy
  • Daily Mass
  • Pastoral Care
  • Social Work and Counselling Support
  • Dietetics
  • Chiropody
  • Horticulture
  • Baths, Jacuzzis and showering facilities
  • Hairdressing
  • Recreational art and social activities
  • Computing
  • Refreshments and lunch (special diets catered for).

We want you to come to the Day Unitin order to improve the quality of your life, maintain, improve or learn new skills and take a well-deserved break dedicated to you.

Our clients arrive in very different ways – some drive themselves, others come by taxi or get someone to drop them off.  If you are unable to make your own transport arrangements we do have a wheelchair accessible bus that can collect and return you from and to your home.  The service is limited and does not cover the whole Mid West region.

No.  Attendance is free of charge. The services we offer are funded through the HSE and through the continued and generous support of our community to our Fundraising Department
