Skills & Strategies 27th October

FreeAims: Pilot group with up to 12 MDT participants from inpatient and community-based services
Teach staff reflective skills to support them to engage with patients and family members who maybe experiencing significant distress and anger.
Date: 27th October (Phase 1) It is probable that evaluation may indicate that a 2nd day (Phase 2), which explores additional skills and strategies is required.
Time: 9.00 – 4.30
Methods:
Create an environment where participants feel safe and unjudged in using the following skills:
Grounding – Connection with self and connection with others.
Reflective skills – repeating, paraphrasing, summarising, learnt through the medium of participation and observation of role play
Self-reflection – learning how I sit with someone in distress.
Who is doing it?
Facilitator: Tina, Mary Jo, for the pilot phase.
Facilitator: If the pilot phase evaluates well, one or two facilitator should be required.
What will it respond to?
In relation to feedback through multiple formats over the past 18 months, staff on the ground has asked for a skill set to deal with Patients/Families experience high levels of distress and anger. The presentation of significant distress and anger appear to have contributed to complaints the organisation has received. Managers are having to support staff who have been on the receiving end of very distressing / challenging conversations and staff want to feel more skilled in dealing with these concerns.
Who can attend?
Staff and Managers across all clinical areas, (buy in from the attendees is essential).
Accreditation: Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are being sought from An Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland).
